What is Vein of Galen Malformation (VOGM)?
Vein of Galen Malformation (VOGM) is a vascular condition. It presents during the first trimester of pregnancy. In VOGM, arteries in the brain are misshapen and connect with veins instead of capillaries. The misshapen arteries cause blood flow to slow down and pressure in the veins to rise. This extra pressure can lead to different problems in infants, like:
- high blood pressure in the heart and lungs
- a buildup of fluid in the brain (called hydrocephaly)
- congestive heart failure
However, VOGM impacts every child differently. The most common treatment is endovascular embolization, a minimally invasive procedure.
The VOGM Support Network is a nonprofit started by parents to provide support and resources for families. To find out more about their important work and how you can help, visit their website: vogm.org
