SVM: Promoting and advancing the discipline of vascular medicine and the care of patients with vascular disease

The Society for Vascular Medicine is a professional organization that was founded in 1989 to foster a broad mission. The goals of the Society are to improve the integration of vascular biological advances into medical practice, and to maintain high standards of clinical vascular medicine.

The Society is distinguished by its emphasis on clinical approaches to vascular disorders. Optimal vascular care is best accomplished by the collegial interaction of a community of vascular professionals, including individuals with expertise in vascular medicine, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, vascular nursing, vascular technology, and other disciplines.

The Society recognizes the importance of individuals with diverse backgrounds in achieving ideal standards of research and clinical practice. The Society encourages these individuals to join the Society and to help accomplish its clinical and scientific mission.

Recognition of Vascular Medicine as a Medical Specialty
Vascular medicine has a long tradition of clinical and academic service in the United States, but the specialized training, skills and practice have only recently received national recognition.

The SVM, as your national professional society, created a successful application to the American Medical Association for such future recognition. Since December 1, 1997, physicians have been able to designate their practice specialty as vascular medicine. This application to the AMA's Work Group for Self-Designated Practice Specialty Codes means that the AMA will consider the distinct specialty characteristics in their future membership surveys and demographic reviews of United States physicians.

Both you and members of your practice community will be able to designate your specialty as vascular medicine by either filling out an AMA Credentials Verification Update Form, or by calling 800-262-3211 (extension 4055). This professional recognition by the AMA, as it seeks to represent all physicians, should encourage you to consider joining or increasing your support for the AMA's effectiveness.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Society for Vascular Medicine is to promote and advance the discipline of vascular medicine and the care of patients with vascular disease by:

• Establishing standards for post-graduate training and stimulating the formation of vascular medicine training programs.
• Developing educational activities including continuing medical education programs for trainees and health care providers.
• Fostering research in vascular medicine and biology.
• Promoting interdisciplinary clinical excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease through the creation of care standards and by engaging in quality improvement activities.
• Serving an advisory role to educational institutions, government agencies, and other health care organizations.
