About Patrick Vargo, MD

Patrick Vargo, MD, is a cardiac (heart) surgeon in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He sees patients at Cleveland Clinic main campus.

Specialty Interests: Aortic valve surgery; surgery for aortic aneurysms and dissections, including minimally invasive and hybrid interventions; transcatheter valve interventions; re-operative cardiac surgery; coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). 

Number of Procedures Performed: Cleveland Clinic performs more than 4,500 heart surgeries each year. All Cleveland Clinic cardiac surgeons complete between 300-400 cardiac cases per year. During his training, Dr. Vargo performed over 800 cardiothoracic surgeries, including aortic valve surgery, reoperations, complex aorta operations and coronary artery bypass surgery.

Education: Dr. Vargo earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio. He completed his internship and residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Cleveland Clinic and was selected as administrative chief resident in his final year of residency. He joined the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2019. 

Research and Publications: Dr. Vargo has co-authored scientific papers on complex cardiac and thoracic surgeries published in leading medical and surgical journals. He also has presented clinical research findings at medical meetings, and has co-authored a chapter in a heart valve manual with two other Cleveland Clinic cardiovascular surgeons, published in 2017.
