Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago is the teaching hospital for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Northwestern Memorial was formed in 1972 by the merger of two Chicago hospitals – Passavant Memorial and Wesley Memorial, which were founded in 1865 and 1888, respectively. Also located on the hospital campus are Prentice Women’s Hospital and the Feinberg, Galter, Olson, Arkes Family and Lavin Family pavilions. Northwestern Medicine has seven other hospitals in its regional health system, including the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. The highly ranked Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute is composed of six centers: Center for Coronary Artery Disease, Center for Heart Failure, Center for Heart Rhythm Disorders, Center for Heart Valve Disease, Center for Preventive Cardiology and Center for Vascular Disease.

The Bluhm Cardiovascular institute also creates what it calls “niche clinical programs” dealing with conditions that include atrial fibrillation, carotid artery disease and congenital heart disease. In treating congenital heart disease, Northwestern Memorial has established the Cardiovascular Bridge Program, in which doctors from Bluhm and the Lurie Children’s Heart Center work together to avoid treatment gaps in patients moving from pediatric to adult care. In 1997, Northwestern Memorial performed the first minimally invasive transmyocardial laser revascularization, a kind of heart procedure that is an alternative to surgery or angioplasty.
