About Dr. Walsh

Dr. Walsh joined the staff of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas in September 1990. In 2001, he was promoted to Professor of Surgery with tenure. In 2006 he was appointed Head, Perioperative Enterprise where he is responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Perioperative Enterprise. In 2014, Dr. Walsh was once again asked to contribute by lending his expertise in development and design in the area of operating rooms of the future, assuming the role of Executive Director of Surgical Facilities Expansion.

Dr. Walsh's major clinical interests include complex surgeries on the lung, trachea, esophagus, and mediastinal organs. He serves as a consultant for many other surgical disciplines for advanced tumors that invade vascular structures and require resection or reconstruction. In conjunction with the departments of neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, he has extensive experience with exposure of all levels of the spine for the removal of tumors involving the vertebral column. He has considerable experience with the use of lasers to remove tumors involving the airways, endoscopic techniques including stent placements, and minimally-invasive video assisted thoracic surgical procedures.

Dr. Walsh has a strong commitment to residency, nursing and patient education. He has presented over 600 lectures on all aspects of surgery of the chest, has published over 200 articles in peer reviewed journals, and has authored or co-authored more than 53 book chapters. He has served on many institutional committees including serving as an Adjuvant Ethicist for 10 years and has collaborated on over 120 research protocols.
